“No.”不是“Number”的缩写，为什么可以表示数字？

数字是我们日常生活中每天都会遇到的存在。英语表达中，数字经常和“No.”一起出现。但是关于“No.”，很多人并不了解。

很多人都误以为“No.”是“Number”的缩写，所以可以用来表示数字。但是为什么是“No.”而不是“Nu.”呢？

其实，“No.”并不是“Number”的缩写！“No.”是“numero”开头和结尾的缩写。“numero”是一个拉丁语单词，它的复数形式是“numerus”。随后被英语引进，演变成“number”。

因此，从意思上看，“No.”相当于“Number”。但是不能说“No.”是“Number”，也不能说“No.”来源于“Number”。

例句：

They live at No.17.

他们住在17号。

这里需要注意的是，为了和单词“no”区分，“No.”一定要加“.”。
